Qualified theft is committed when a person steals from somebody who has given his trust and confidence. It is a serious crime if the punishment for suspects acts if proven, is reclusion perpetua, bail will not be allowed unless the evidence of guilt is strong.
A 21-year-old supermarket employee was arrested on Sunday, December 10, 2017, for stealing a can of corned beef worth PHP31 from a supermarket in Manila.
A supermarket clerk named Paul Mathew Tanglao was reportedly taking the can from the store’s warehouse and hid it in his apron because he was hungry, according to a report in ABS-CBN News.
According to the police report, a security guard caught Tanglao hiding a can of corned beef in his apron at around 5:40 p.m. last Sunday. The guard immediately reported it to his superior, who then reported it to management.
A supervisor then asked a cashier to file a complaint against the suspect. The supermarket proceeded to file charges despite efforts of the police officers to convince it to let the man off from the otherwise petty offense.
The unidentified supermarket is described to be part of one of the Philippines’ largest mall chains.
However, some police officers told this reporter they had tried to dissuade the supermarket from pressing charges – all to no avail.
